Swadesh list for Neapolitan[edit]

Hi, I rolled back the addition of the "GEMET"-Namespace to the Swadesh list for Neapolitan - it is not part of the GEMET-Thesaurus so it does not make sense to add it there. Well, maybe we should think about an own namespace for Swadesh ... I'll think a bit about that one and then maybe propose it. Thanks! --Sabine 09:50, 19 April 2006 (CEST)

Well GEMET is a multilingua thesaurus on environmeltal terminology - so the Swadesh list is something completely different. The Swadesh list will also proof to be "not good enough" since in English you already have words with several defined meanings (example: heavy --> weight / difficutl). For now we are building them within these tables to have something to start with. This will change when we may add new terms manually :-) Well, I just wanted to explain why I took the prefix of. Have a great evening! Ciao, --Sabine 18:37, 19 April 2006 (CEST)

Hoi Henk, ik heb je rechten gegeven zodat je ook kunt editen. Lees svp over de DefinedMeaning en wees voorzichtig in wat je doet. Vraag, en bedenk of het IRC kanaal wat voor je is.. Groetjes, GerardM 14:44, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

Bedankt. HenkvD 16:37, 3 May 2006 (CEST)

Ik heb altijd gedacht dat het jij hebt, hij heeft was. Weet je het zeker dat de 2. persoon enkelvoud hebt is? Groeten Londenp 13:34, 8 August 2006 (CEST)

Lombard Swadesh list[edit]

Dear HenkvD, thank you so much for arranging in wiki format Lombard Swadesh list. Now I have prepared another table with some dialects more, using the excel->wiki conversion macro. So I am going to try to merge the two tables. Sorry for not having noticed that, I have been away for a while. Cheers, Claudi--Clamengh 15:20, 29 August 2006 (CEST)

Do you know, please, a quick way to wikify a list? Many thanks.--Clamengh 15:30, 29 August 2006 (CEST)
I usually use NOTEPAD editor or so, and replace certain charachters to insert [[Expression: and |]]. Could you redo the excel-> wiki for swadesh list for Lombard and adding some special charachter at the end of each word? HenkvD 17:11, 29 August 2006 (CEST)
Dear HenkvD, many thanks for your kind reply. Please confirm if I unterstood well: you are suggesting to add some characters at the end of each word to help NOTEPAD to do find/replace? If so, that's a good idea. Nevertheless, I copied the excel-->wiki macro from German wikipedia just today, and I'm not able to modify it at present. But I have focused the problem. Cheers, Claudi--Clamengh 17:59, 29 August 2006 (CEST)
You might also be able to add [[Expression: and |]] in excel first. HenkvD 19:57, 29 August 2006 (CEST)
Right, many thanks again. This is much more simple. Cheers, Claudi--Clamengh 10:04, 30 August 2006 (CEST)
Hi HenkvD, many thanks again, you have been very kind. Soory for delay in replying (some days spent in Switzerland)--Clamengh 17:50, 8 September 2006 (CEST)

Ok, I will not do again. Rei-artur 23:42, 8 September 2006 (CEST)
The same for me. Sorry, I didn't know. --Clamengh 15:41, 10 September 2006 (CEST)

Chemical elements[edit]

Hi Henk,

When I was still an active contributor to the English Wiktionary, I added an exhaustive list of translations for them. Maybe you want to base your additions on those, or at least you might check whether they are the same there as what you have in your source.

Kind regards,

Jo (User:Polyglot), I do use these. My goal is not to add all translations yet, but have all DM's for chemical elements in place. When in the future it is easier to add more translations together and it is possible to add all langauges we can add the rest. HenkvD 19:32, 17 September 2006 (CEST)
That makes a lot of sense. Keep up the good work! Polyglot 19:36, 17 September 2006 (CEST)

Countries and Continents[edit]

Hi HenkvD,
You are using Expression:broader terms and Expression:narrower terms in the wrong way, when it comes to countries and continent or their parts. For example, Belgium is not a narrower term of Western Europe, and Western Europe is not a broader term of Belgium. These relations are there for things like dog and animal: dog is a narrower term of animal. So one can say a dog is an animal, but not Belgium is a Western Europe. What we need is a "is part of" relation. --Moyogo 19:41, 24 September 2006 (CEST)

I see what you mean, but is it realy wrong? Is Western Europe a narrower term of Europe or a part of Europe? What additional relations would be needed in your opinion? HenkvD 09:17, 25 September 2006 (CEST)
To me Western Europe is part of Europe as a tail is part of a dog. Narrow/broader term describes a w:hyponymy, or a subset relation. Whereas part-of describes a w:meronymy, or a subpart/element relation. These a two radically different relations that should not be mixed up.
Antonymy (in its different forms) would be a useful relation, although very complex in some case. ---Moyogo 21:06, 25 September 2006 (CEST)
You suggest the following relation types:
Would this be all possible relations? What about the relation between a country and a person from that country? Should we use "related terms" for a German is a related term of Germany and Germany is a related term of a German? HenkvD 23:47, 25 September 2006 (CEST)
The related terms relation is really blurry and could mean anything. But unless we want to go crazy with the number of possible relations we should stick to the minimum and keep it simple, therefore a generic relations such asa this one might be better than bad. --Moyogo 19:53, 26 September 2006 (CEST)

We should probably try to look at what similar projects have been using for relations. w:WordNet would be a good start. --Moyogo 19:52, 26 September 2006 (CEST)

Hoi, There is no reason to clean things on several DM's like you did on Aabenraa. This is a relational database and therefore you only need to do things once..
Thanks, GerardM 21:18, 29 September 2006 (CEST)

It appeared as 3 DM's, as stated on the Beer Parlor and as can seen on the different numbers 6194, 6197 and 6198). These 3 are now complete empty and deleted. One correct DM is still remainig (6196). HenkvD 21:27, 29 September 2006 (CEST)

Hi, as you might have already noted we are working on the OLPC Children's Dictionary. Actually I am the one trying to get as many people contributing as possible and therefore I prepared this message. I am wondering if you would like to help us and work on ten words: OLPC Children's Dictionary/1000 Basic words/Wordgroup 007. What does contribute mean? Translate the definitions and words into your mother tongue (nld) :-) I really hope to see your "Yes I will do" note on my discussion page :-) I will then add the template to make sure nobody else will work on these 10 words. Thank you! --Sabine 16:49, 9 October 2006 (CEST)

Boy, that was quick! Both a welcome and a response to my edit summary about no interwiki links within minutes.

What I'm used to when I have signed up for other wikis is to use [[WikiPedia:link]] as the Wikipedia interwiki link, rather than the internal Wikimedia interwiki linking style of [[w:link]]. The first version has worked in roughly 95% of all wikis that I've signed up on. When it hasn't worked, it has always been because the wiki didn't have an interwiki map (up until today). speed of relations[edit]

(English) Hi, I understand that the speed of relations is improved; indexes are added that made this possible..
(Dutch) Hoi, Ik begrijp dat de snelheid van relaties nogal verbeterd is; er zijn indexen toegevoegd die dit mogelijk maken.. Groetjes, GerardM 22:54, 31 October 2006 (CET)

(English) The speed of WZ in general has worsened, but can be explainable by the added functionality. Since the last update (18/10) the speed of adding of relations is very bad. It takes 5 till 10 seconds before the DM's appear, and after that again 1 or 2 seconds to show the subset of DM's. According to me you als need to make a change on the typed text, otherwise nothing will happen at all. Unfortunately I don't see improvement, maybe only on the last 1 or 2 seconds, but not before.
HenkvD 23:19, 31 October 2006 (CET)
(English) Th software has been updated; in an other project this already is in production. Now Erik has to bring it to OmegaWiki..
(Dutch) De software is aangepast; in een ander project is dit al in productie. Erik moet het nu ook nog naar OmegaWiki brengen.. GerardM 08:28, 1 November 2006 (CET)
Hi, I'm sorry to intrude here but could you please explain the problem in English, too? I'm interested to know the problem as well :P Thanks! -Rappo 15:18, 1 November 2006 (CET)
Done. I just inserted the English translations of the Dutch discussion. HenkvD 22:13, 3 November 2006 (CET)

Hey HenkvD, thanks for working on we now start enter the expressions --MartinMai 22:02, 18 November 2006 (CET)

How did you cleanup my empty definition of kiwi ? There's still one to cleanup [1] and I don't find how to do it.

Grasyop 21:17, 3 December 2006 (CET)

Thanks. Shouldn't it be possible to make the cleanup from the "expression" page where the new meaning was created ?
Grasyop 22:10, 4 December 2006 (CET)

Part of theme: verb[edit]

Hi HenkvD,

I saw you classified some DMs explaining verbs as "part of theme verb". I do not think this is neccessary, due to the fact that there will be an extra field for parts of speech once. It also seems to be a bit confunsing to me because "freeze", e.g., is not really a part of the theme "verb". Greetings, — Pill δ 11:16, 10 December 2006 (EST)

I will stop classifying as part of speech. I hope that extra field for parts of speech will come soon. HenkvD 11:22, 10 December 2006 (EST)

Move and buggy bug :-)[edit]

Hi Henk, it seems as if your solution works, but we need it confirmed by one of the developers. Well I will ask in the chat :-) Thank you! --Sabine 16:17, 3 January 2007 (EST)

UK and US English[edit]

Hoi Henk,
Als je verschil weet tussen een en-UK en een en-US spelling, please add those and remove the en spelling. These are intended to be correct in all versions of English and they are apparently not. Thanks, :) PS good work :) GerardM 08:55, 28 January 2007 (EST)

Ik praat te veel Engels ...

When I remove the en spelling all these words will appear on the needs translation to english. I hope in future there will be a kind of tree structure in languages, so that en-UK will default to en, on any level. Also on needs translation... Should I remove the en spellings now? HenkvD 13:06, 28 January 2007 (EST)
Yes please .. we are going to get this hierarchical structure that you ask for as we are going to import the ISO-639-6 data when it becomes available. Thanks, GerardM 13:17, 28 January 2007 (EST)
OK. I will try to remove the en spelling when en-UK and en-US exist. HenkvD 13:19, 28 January 2007 (EST)

Paryż i Lizbona[edit]

Thx for correct my mistakes. I thinked that there articles I bad made, but I wasn't certain. I Pietras1988 15:15, 20 February 2007 (EST)

  • Yes, you're right, I'll be more cautious from now on. I haven't finished to translate the name of all the languages into Breton and as a result I see a mixed list which is not easy to deal with. I have also created the article for Breizh (Brittany) as I didn't noticed that Brittany already existed with a different definition. Is that a problem ? --Fulup 16:33, 14 March 2007 (EDT)

UK English[edit]

Hoi, I can ask Leftmost to do the en-UK rename.. GerardM 09:46, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

Ik heb met veel moeite de iconen uit het ontwerp gesloopt omdat de kritiek juist was dat ze het een rommelige blik gaven.. Vandaar dat ik je hierin terug gedraaid heb.. Sorry, GerardM 22:07, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Jammer, maar het zij zo. Veel succes in Taipei. HenkvD 07:24, 28 July 2007 (EDT)
